Seven Questions to Ask an Independent Insurance Agent

Use these seven questions to understand your options, tradeoffs, and next steps before you make a coverage decision.

A strong insurance conversation should leave you clearer, not more confused. These questions can help you evaluate recommendations and understand what you are choosing.

1. What risks are we trying to protect against?

Start with the purpose of the coverage. Ask the agent to connect each recommendation to a realistic risk, obligation, or goal in your life or business.

2. What is covered—and what is not?

Ask about important exclusions, limitations, waiting periods, network rules, deductibles, and conditions. Examples are helpful: “What would happen if this specific situation occurred?”

3. Which assumptions did you use?

Confirm the information behind the recommendation, such as drivers, property details, prescriptions, doctors, business operations, payroll, or prior coverage. Incorrect assumptions can lead to an unsuitable comparison.

4. What tradeoffs come with the lower-cost option?

Lower cost may mean a higher deductible, a narrower network, lower limits, fewer optional protections, or more out-of-pocket exposure. Ask the agent to explain the tradeoff in direct terms.

5. What could I pay after a claim or during a high-use year?

Look beyond the premium. Ask about deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, coverage limits, and expenses that would remain your responsibility.

6. What should I do before changing coverage?

Confirm effective dates, required documents, payments, inspections, enrollment steps, and any follow-up items. Do not cancel or decline current coverage until the replacement is confirmed and effective.

7. How will you help after the policy begins?

Ask how to report changes, get documents, request a review, and find the right claims contact. Insurance needs evolve, so ongoing access matters.

A final question for yourself

After the conversation, can you explain in your own words what you selected and why? If not, ask for another explanation. A trustworthy process makes room for questions and does not rely on pressure.
