Home and Auto: Common Coverage Gaps Worth Reviewing

A practical review of limits, deductibles, property changes, and everyday exposures that can be overlooked.

Home and auto policies are familiar, but familiar does not always mean fully understood. A regular review can uncover changes in property, drivers, values, and risks that were not present when the policy was first issued.

Home rebuilding cost versus market value

The amount needed to rebuild a home after a major loss is not the same as its real-estate value. Construction costs, debris removal, local building requirements, and special features can affect the needed dwelling limit.

Water, flood, and sewer risks

Many homeowners policies treat different kinds of water damage differently. Flood, sewer or drain backup, groundwater, and sudden plumbing damage may not be covered in the same way. Ask which events are excluded and whether separate coverage is available.

Valuable or unusual property

Jewelry, collectibles, firearms, tools, electronics, watercraft, business property, and other high-value items may have special limits or conditions. Keep an inventory and ask whether important items need scheduled coverage or a separate policy.

Drivers and vehicle use

  • New household drivers, including young drivers or relatives who have moved in.

  • Delivery, rideshare, business, or frequent work use of a personal vehicle.

  • Vehicles titled or regularly kept at a different address.

  • Custom equipment, trailers, recreational vehicles, or items carried for work.

  • Loan or lease requirements and the possible difference between a vehicle’s value and the remaining balance.

Liability limits and assets

Liability coverage helps protect against certain claims made by others. Ask whether current home and auto limits still fit your household, driving patterns, property, and financial exposure, and whether an umbrella policy is worth discussing.

Deductibles you can realistically absorb

A higher deductible may lower premium, but it also increases what you must pay after a covered loss. Review separate deductibles that may apply to wind, hail, named storms, collision, or comprehensive claims.

Coverage varies by policy and insurer. Review the actual contract and endorsements before making a change. For an independent home or auto review in West Virginia or Ohio, contact Two Waters Policy Services at 304-220-0011.
